Ocular Protholitic Rehablitation

Ocular prosthesis can significantly reduce the psychological distress associated with losing an eye.The loss of an eye can be caused by malignancies, congenital defects, irreparable trauma, painful blindness or sympathetic ophthalmia.

The surgical management may include evisceration, enucleation, or exenteration, depending on the severity of the involvement. The evisceration procedure involves removing the intraocular contents of the globe, leaving the sclera and sometimes the cornea.

A surgical enucleation removes the entire globe and a portion of the optic nerve from the orbit. Exenteration involves the removal of the entire contents of the orbit, including the extraocular muscles.
