Low vision can be a result of many diseases that affect the eye. An injury to the eyes could lead to low vision. Plus, some people are born with it. The macula may break down and result in loss of central sight (macular degeneration). The blood vessels may become weak and leak fluid into the eye, causing diabetic retinopathy. And the optic nerve may be damaged by glaucoma, which increases eye pressure and robs people of their optic nerve.
The symptoms of low vision depend on the cause of the vision loss and where the problem is in the eye. Symptoms can include :
Blank spots, dark spots or wavy lines in the centre of your vision.
Blurred, hazy or cloudy vision or double vision.
Independent travel and mobility
Contrast and glare
Reading is difficult
